Region
White city extending the hillside overlooking the castle and the parish church (both national monuments), Santiago do Cacém is a valuable historical and architectural heritage of great interest to the visitor. The Roman ruins of Miróbriga and also the Municipal Museum are binding sites on the cultural map . With a length of 9 km, the coast, corresponding to the fullest extent the beaches, from which stand out the river beach of St. Andrew Pond, Old Hill, White Sands and Cortiço Source, where you can also find good cuisine. Inside the county, you can visit some villages with typical Alentejo architecture such as the village of Abela, S. Domingos da Serra, S. Francisco da Serra where the craft is one of the main interests.
Roman Ruins
Archaeological site of great importance, has been inhabited since the IV century B.C. initially by the Celts and after the I century A.C. with strong Roman influence. They can be visited in addition to the Venus and Aesculapius shrine, the Forum, the complex Thermal regarded for its conservation, the most important Roman resort in Portugal, the Hippodrome (existing only in the national territory) and urban precincts.
Castle and Historical Center
The castle is a Moorish fortification and was rebuilt after the reconquest by Christians. In the castle hill you can visit the chapel of San Pedro, religious XVI century building. Next to the castle is the parish church, temple of gothic origin, rebuilt after the earthquake of 1755. It is also worth a special note in the parish church, the remarkable reliquary of the Holy Cross - offered by Byzantine princess D. Vetácia - and intaglio gothic, offered this princess by Queen Santa Isabel. The Historical Center is a valuable architectural heritage dominated by Conde Square Bracial, where you can see the stately houses and the Pelourinho dated 1845.
Museum
The Municipal Museum , housed in the old jail building, consists of a set of archaeological finds from the ruins of Miróbriga and other county areas and also an ethnographic collection.
Ecology and Nature
At about 15 Km from Santiago do Cacém you can visit the nature reserve of the ponds of St. André and Sancha consists of a rich flora and fauna which stand waterfowl such as ducks, herons and kingfishers loons. Along the lakes we find long sandy beaches, enhancer element of the tourist offer of the region, which together with the local cuisine (fish stew and eel stew) make this region a unsurpassable location.
